Wagering requirements — what does 30x actually cost you?

The most misunderstood number in casino bonuses. Here's what the multiplier actually means, how to calculate your real cost, and where the break-even point sits.

What's a wagering requirement?

It's the number of times you need to bet the bonus amount before you can withdraw anything. Written as a multiplier — "30x wagering" or "35x playthrough."

The formula: Bonus × Multiplier = Total bets required. A £50 bonus at 30x means you need to place £1,500 in bets before you see any of it.

The real cost nobody talks about

Every bet you place has a house edge working against you. At 96% RTP (which is standard for UK slots), the casino keeps 4% of every pound wagered on average. That adds up fast.

BonusWageringBets requiredExpected lossNet value
£5010x£500£20+£30 ✓
£5020x£1,000£40+£10 ✓
£5025x£1,250£50£0 (break-even)
£5035x£1,750£70−£20 ✗
£5040x£2,000£80−£30 ✗

At 96% RTP, 25x is the break-even point. The UK industry average is 35-40x — which means most welcome bonuses are mathematically designed to lose you money.

// Save yourself the maths

Don't do this calculation for every offer. My wagering calculator takes your specific numbers and tells you if it's worth it in seconds.

What does the wagering apply to?

There are three different structures and this matters a lot:

  • Bonus amount only — best for you. £50 bonus at 30x = £1,500 required bets.
  • Deposit plus bonus — much worse. £50 deposit + £50 bonus at 30x = £3,000 required bets. Twice the playthrough for the same stated multiplier.
  • Free spin winnings only — best structure for free spins. If you win £8 from 20 spins at 20x, that's only £160 in bets.

Game choice changes everything

Most casinos don't let all games contribute equally. This is called game weighting and it can completely change the maths.

GameTypical contributionEffective multiplier at 30x
Slots100%30x
Live roulette10-20%150-300x effective
Blackjack10%300x effective
Video poker10-20%150-300x effective

This is why I always use slots to clear wagering — and specifically high-RTP ones. Playing blackjack during wagering is basically throwing money away.

Time limits

Most UK bonuses expire within 7-30 days. Miss the deadline and you lose everything — the bonus and any winnings from it.

  • Free spins: 3-7 days (tight — clear these first)
  • Welcome match bonuses: 21-30 days (more breathing room)
  • Reload bonuses: 7-14 days

Questions I get asked

What does 30x wagering mean?+
You need to bet 30 times the bonus amount before you can withdraw. A £50 bonus at 30x means £1,500 in total bets. At 96% RTP, that costs you about £60 on average — more than the bonus is worth.
Does wagering apply to my deposit or just the bonus?+
Depends on the casino. Some apply it to bonus only, others to deposit plus bonus combined. The latter is way worse — always check before you deposit.
What wagering level is actually worth it?+
At 96% average RTP, 25x is the break-even point. Below 25x is positive value on average. Above it, you're expected to lose more than the bonus gives you.
Can I play any game during wagering?+
Usually slots count at 100% but blackjack and roulette at only 10-20%. Playing table games during wagering effectively multiplies your required playthrough by 5-10x.
What happens if I don't finish the wagering?+
The bonus and any winnings from it are forfeited. Your original deposit is usually still withdrawable if it's been kept separate in a non-sticky structure.
