Non-sticky bonuses — the parachute option

Most players have never heard of non-sticky bonuses. Experienced players use almost nothing else. Here's what they are, why the maths works, and when to pull the parachute.

// Quick version
  • 🎯 Non-sticky = your cash plays first. The bonus stays separate until your real money runs out.
  • 🪂 The "parachute": Win big before your deposit runs out? Forfeit the bonus and withdraw immediately.
  • 📊 Better EV than sticky bonuses at the same wagering requirement — the exit option has real value.
  • 🔍 Rare in UK: Maybe 15% of UKGC casinos offer this structure.

What's a non-sticky bonus?

A non-sticky bonus (also called parachute bonus or forfeitable bonus) keeps your cash deposit and bonus funds separate. Your real money plays first.

The bonus only kicks in when your cash balance hits zero. The crucial advantage: if you win big during the cash phase, you can forfeit the bonus and withdraw your winnings immediately without ever touching the wagering requirement.

Sticky vs non-sticky side by side

Sticky bonus
Deposit £50, get £50 bonus
Balance = £100 (mixed together)
Can't withdraw until entire £100 wagered through at 30x = £3,000 in bets.
Win £400 early? Still need to finish all £3,000 before you see it.
Non-sticky
Deposit £50, get £50 bonus (separate)
Cash plays first → bonus activates when cash = £0
Win £400 before cash runs out? Forfeit bonus. Withdraw £400 now.
If cash runs out: bonus activates with 30x on £50 only = £1,500 in bets.

Why non-sticky has better expected value

The non-sticky structure gives you an option that sticky bonuses don't: the ability to exit profitably during a winning streak. That option is worth something.

With sticky, your upside is capped until you grind through all the wagering. With non-sticky, a hot run that takes you from £50 to £400 means you can lock in the £350 profit and walk away. The probability of this happening is real and adds to your expected value.

When to pull the parachute

The optimal forfeit point depends on your risk tolerance, but here's what I use:

  • Forfeit when cash balance exceeds 3x your deposit. Deposit £50, balance hits £150+ → forfeit, withdraw. The certain profit is worth more than the expected value of the remaining bonus.
  • Forfeit if winnings exceed the bonus amount. If your cash wins are bigger than the bonus value, the bonus is no longer the main source of value in this session.
  • Don't forfeit when cash is nearly gone. If your deposit is almost exhausted, let the bonus activate. Its expected value is better than walking away empty-handed.

How to spot a non-sticky bonus

Casinos rarely advertise this directly. Look for these phrases in the terms:

  • "Real money plays first"
  • "Forfeitable bonus" or "bonus can be forfeited"
  • "Cash is wagered before bonus funds"
  • A Remove Bonus or Forfeit Bonus button in the cashier
// If you can't find the forfeit button

UKGC rules require casinos to let players view and manage bonus terms at any time. If a casino claims non-sticky but doesn't show a forfeit option in the cashier, ask live chat before you start wagering.

Non-sticky vs no wagering — which is better?

Different things. No wagering means 0x playthrough — winnings are cash immediately regardless of structure. Non-sticky is about play order and the forfeit option, but it still has wagering attached.

No wagering is always better in pure EV terms. Non-sticky is the best available structure when 0x isn't on offer. Check my no wagering picks first — only consider non-sticky if there's no genuine 0x offer at the casino you want to try.

Frequently asked questions

Do all casinos offer non-sticky bonuses?

No — it's relatively rare. Maybe 15-20% of UK casinos use this structure. Most use sticky bonuses where your deposit and bonus are mixed from the start. Always check the terms for "cash plays first" language.

Can I switch a sticky bonus to non-sticky?

No. The structure is set by the casino, not the player. Once you've opted into a sticky bonus, the terms are locked. Check before you deposit.

What happens to my winnings if I forfeit?

Winnings from your cash balance stay yours. Winnings from bonus funds (if the bonus had started playing) are forfeited along with the bonus. The timing of when you forfeit matters.

Are non-sticky bonuses better than low-wagering sticky ones?

Depends on the wagering. A non-sticky 35x bonus might have worse expected value than a sticky 10x bonus. The forfeit option adds value, but can't fully compensate for huge wagering differences. Run the numbers for your specific offers.
